This July, we are throwing the spotlight on Maaike who has been a technician, a scribe, and surgical coordinator with Precision Eye and Laser for many years. She is originally from the Netherlands and worked as a licensed optician there. Read her experience in her words below!
“8 years ago, my family and I moved to New York from the Netherlands, where I was a licensed optician working for a regional hospital as a technician. I remember my first 2 years here were pretty tough. I had to re-learn the medical jargon in English and I had to learn to navigate a completely different healthcare system. It was pretty intense at first, but I am such a better technician for it. I love my patients, and I love that our practice is such a big supporter of professional development. I am currently working on my advanced COT certification with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.”
